Sylvania to buy K-9 police unit

SYLVANIA - City Council members agreed at a budget work session Thursday night that a K-9 Unit for the Sylvania Police Department would be a wise investment to deter drug-related crime.
Mayor Margaret Evans and City Manager Carter Crawford met with council members to discuss the possibility of changes to the 2011 budget.
After a consensus was reached, Crawford said that the purchase of a K-9 unit and the appropriate equipment and housing would be accounted for in the 2011 budget.
Evans said she was very much in favor of the decision, as she and Mayor Pro Tem Preston Dees both agreed that the purchase would be a major deterrent in drug-related crime.
At an estimated cost of $9,000 for the dog plus the cost of equipment and housing, Crawford said that he believed the purchase would pay for itself in the long run.
"There are possibilities of receiving grants for the purchase of a K-9 unit," Crawford said. "Strong policy will have to be put in place, however, as to how the program will operate."
Proposed capital improvements and projects for the city were reviewed, but a series of further work sessions will occur in the coming months before the budget is finalized and adopted on Dec. 21, 2010.
