Local Roundup: Devils fall in title game

    The Statesboro boy's basketball team fell to Richmond Academy 50-43 Saturday in the championship game of the region 3-AAAA tournament.
    Eric Ferguson finished with a team-high 13 points and Justin Houston added 11 for the Blue Devils (17-11), who earned the No. 2 seed from their region and will host an opponent to be named Saturday in the first round of the state playoffs.

Bennett's 36 lifts Lady Devils
    Statesboro's Monnette Bennett scored a career-high 36 points Saturday to lead the Lady Devils to a 50-43 win over Effingham County in the Region 3-AAAA consolation game.
    With the victory, Statesboro secured the region's No. 3 seed for the state playoffs, which begin next week. SHS will be on the road against an opponent to be determined.

Screven girls
stopped by Laney
    The Screven County girls, ranked sixth in the state in Class AA, fell to No. 4 Laney, 51-40, Saturday in the championship game of the region 3-AA tournament. The Lady Gamecocks, last year's region 3-AA champion, were led by Ashley Loundy and Kadedra Evans with 10 points each. It was the second-straight region crown for Laney, which won the 7-AA title last year. Screven (23-5) earned the region's No. 2 seed and will host the No. 3 seed from region 2-AA Friday for the opening round of the state playoffs. Of Screven's five losses this season, three were to Laney.

Screven boys earn No. 3 seed
    Dajuwan Carter hit the game-winning basket with 12.5 seconds to go and made one late free throw to seal Screven County's 62-59 win over Westside Saturday in the region 3-AA consolation game. Carter finished with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Matt Taylor added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Gamecocks (15-13), who earned the No. 3 seed from their region. Screven will travel to the No. 2 seed from region 2-AA Saturday for the opening round of the state playoffs.
