Herald's Reggie Hunter dies in car accident

A single vehicle crash Saturday morning claimed the life of one man on Burkhalter Road, according to Senior Trooper D. H. Averitt.

Averitt said Reginald Hunter, 36, of Bethel Church Road, appeared to lose control of his 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix just south of Langston Chapel Road and struck a ditch, causing the vehicle to overturn and throwing Hunter from the car.

"The fact that he was thrown from the vehicle leads us to believe he was not wearing a seat belt," said Averitt.

Averitt said the initial call came in at 10:15 a.m. Saturday and Hunter was confirmed dead at 10:30 a.m.

Hunter had worked for the Statesboro Herald in the pressroom since November 2001.

"He was a real good guy. I'm going to miss Reggie," said Bryan Law, Hunter's supervisor. "He just told me at the first of the year that he'd finally gotten his life in order and, for the first time, felt like he was being the man he should be for his family."

Law said Hunter was very energetic and outgoing.

"No matter what kind of mood you were in, if you got around Reggie, you were going to be in a good mood," Law said.

Averitt said the accident is still under investigation.
