Fun with the Family with Julie Lavender - Make it an a-MAY-zing month

Julie Lavender

April showers (or the lack thereof) brought forth May flowers and more hours of celebrations for families to share. Allow memorable, sweet times to blossom and grow throughout the month of May. Take advantage of every possible moment in May to cherish those you love.
Next to the days announced by the calendar – Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Last-Day-of-School, pencil in these unique, fun holidays to celebrate with your family.
National Barbecue Week/National Hamburger Month – Though most of us southerners think “barbecue” means that delicious stuff chopped up with barbecue sauce added and complimented with a bowl of stew, the powers that be that established this holiday really intended for shared fellowship around a grill. Start with ground beef and turn your meal into a create-your-own-burger buffet. Add a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix and a tablespoon of Dale’s Steak Seasoning sauce or Worcestershire sauce per pound of meat. Before grilling the burgers, prepare a buffet of toppings – cheese varieties, like feta, blue, American, cheddar, or Swiss; pickles; lettuce; tomatoes; onions; cooked bacon; steak or barbecue sauces; condiments and any other topping you can fathom. Then, encourage the entire family to participate in the grilling - sit outside or on the porch together while you wait for the burgers to finish. Complete the meal with a green salad and picnic outside.
Lumpy Rug Day – Well, you thought you’d heard it all, right? Not quite sure why anyone would view this as a celebration, but, then again, why not? Gather your lumpy throw-rugs and take them outside to play hopscotch in the grass. If you happen not to have lumpy rugs, never fear – you can still celebrate. Grab a few old towels and pretend!
National Duckling Month – Visit the library or bookstore and find books about ducklings – the list is endless. Find some really old classics (like, Make Way for Ducklings) or look for new books (like, the “Duck and Goose” series) about these adorable babies. Read a couple outside in the grass, then play a rousing game of “Duck, Duck, Goose.” Be on the lookout all month for baby fowl when passing bodies of water!
National Wildflower Week/National Shoe Week – Combine two more celebrations this month for a fun craft. Let each family member choose a pair of fairly-clean-on-the-bottom shoes. Use the shoes as a pattern; trace flower petals on brightly colored construction paper. Cut out the petals and glue them onto a small paper plate. Glue sunflower seeds or popcorn kernels in the middle of the paper plate. Glue the flower onto a green construction paper stem. Decorate the walls with your creations. Go on a walk with the family and look for wildflowers. How many different colors can you find?
Date -Your-Mate Month – Take time this month to celebrate that very special someone in your life. Secure a baby-sitter and find something unique to do together. If you can’t get a sitter, put the kids to bed and play cards or Scrabble; watch a rented movie and snack on popcorn; or sit outside and look for falling stars.
Make a-may-zing memories in the month of May. You’ll be so glad you did!
