Homeowners over age 65 may qualify for state property tax exemption

Text Size: Small Large Medium
Homeowners over age 65 on January 1, 2007 may be entitled to an exemption of the state portion of Property Tax on their personal residence, said Bulloch County Tax Assessor's Chief Appraiser John Scott.
The new exemption ratified by voters in last November’s General Election would exempt only the homestead property up to 10 acres and the residence on that property from the state levy of 1/4 mill, he said. The tax savings would be $10 on a property valued at $100,000. In order to receive the exemption for 2007 the homeowner must make application in the Bulloch County Tax Assessors Office by March 1, 2007.
Those property owners already receiving an over 65 Age and Income based exemption will automatically receive the new exemption; however if not, they must make the required application, he said. Applicants should bring a drivers license or some other form of documentation to show birth date and age.
Applications and additional information can be obtained by contacting the Bulloch County Tax Assessors Office at 115 North Main Street or by calling 764-2181 during business hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
