Fun with the Family with Julie Lavender - Enjoy the beauty of Springtime

Julie Lavender

When temperatures continued to dip night after night and snow blanketed Statesboro for the first time in several years, we wondered if springtime would ever visit again. But, just as faithful as the inevitable turning of the calendar page, so too is the faithfulness and beauty of springtime. Spring has arrived with grand splendor – from fluffy, white blossoms, to deep hues of purple and pink, to shades of green too many to count, to brilliant yellows and crimsons swaying in the farmers’ fields. How can one fail to celebrate the beauty of spring when such delightful colors adorn the Earth? Celebrate spring; celebrate new life; celebrate the cross; celebrate family. It’s a wonderful time of year!
Easter – Attend church services with your family, then go for a drive and see just how many different springtime colors you can find. Snap digital pictures of fields and blossoms, then use the shots for screen savers on your computer. Look for signs of new life, like buds on the trees or birds and squirrels building nests. Search for visual reminders of the cross, like dogwood blossoms and cross-shapes in the tip-tops of pine trees. Let down the windows in the car and take in the aromas of spring, like fresh-turned dirt, newly-cut grass, or wisteria blooms. When you return home, have an egg hunt, eat chocolate bunnies, enjoy the wonders of Easter.
Pigs-in-a-Blanket Day – A yummy celebration! Purchase cocktail wieners and a can of crescent rolls. Unroll dough into triangles; brush dough with a thin layer of melted butter. Sprinkle garlic powder and Parmesan cheese on top of butter. Cut each pre-cut triangle into two triangles. Starting at the large end, roll up one cocktail wiener in the dough, placing the “pig” on a very lightly greased baking dish, point side down. Bake, according to directions on crescent roll package.
National Frog Month – Sit outside in the early evening or after a rain and listen for the croaking of the frogs. Allow them to serenade you, while reading frog books from the library, like, some of Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad books.
Be Kind to Spiders Week – Personally, I’ve never met a spider I wanted to be kind to, but, whatever spins your web.....Make a spider puppet using construction paper to celebrate this holiday. Wad a piece of black construction paper into a tight ball. Cut eight strips from construction paper and fold them accordion-style for the legs. Staple each leg into place, four on each side. Glue on small wiggle eyes or fuzzy pom-poms. Tie fishing line or yarn around the center of the spider body and make a loop on the other end to put on your finger or around your wrist. Take your new spider friend on a walk, let him dance, or put on a spider puppet show.
Sliced Bread’s Birthday and Peanut Butter and Jelly Day – Combine these two holidays for a scrumptious lunch celebration. Use springtime cookie cutters, like flowers, rabbits, chicks or eggs, to cut out shapes from sandwich bread. (Save the extra bread to make breadcrumbs for cooking, or toss them outside to feed the birds.) Let your kids help stir together in a bowl the peanut butter and jelly, then spread the mixture onto the sandwich shapes. Sing “Happy Birthday to bread,” then enjoy your sandwich.
Find excuses to celebrate often with your family during the month of April. Make goodies in the kitchen together, play in a puddle together, swing at the park simultaneously, play leap frog in the grass as a family. Take a deep breath of springtime air and enjoy every moment of April!
