Mornings unPHILtered - Bulloch’s United Way makes its pitch

Barry Turner

Tuesday's guests on the “Mornings unPHILtered” show were Bob Olliff, executive director of Bulloch County's United Way, and Barry Turner, the chairman of the 2009-2010 campaign. The duo came on the show to discuss about the ongoing fundraising campaign.
Olliff told host Phil Boyum that the campaign has been underway for several months, and is now in its final stages. Many corporations have worked out a way that employees may donate to the United Way through their payroll departments.
Olliff said his agency can help with making the arrangements. There are only two people in the Bulloch office as the United Way gives most of its money to its charities rather than administrative costs.
The United Way of Southeast Georgia is actually an umbrella organization, supporting many agencies throughout a number of counties, including Bulloch. There are 19 agencies that they support, from those working with homebound seniors to the American Red Cross to the Statesboro Food Bank.
Turner said the United Way allows donors to specify where their money goes. Many want it to go to one or more particular agencies, and that is just where it will go. To be a part of the United Way organization, Bulloch's United Way sends one percent of its donations to the United Way of America.
Despite the tightening of the economy, the United Way has worked hard to keep the money flowing to all of the agencies that rely on their support, Olliff said.
Finally, Olliff and Turner reminded the show's listeners that if any individuals or companies fared particularly well this year, there are tax deductions that can be earned for those last minute donations made before the end of the year.
