Letter – Bulloch lucky to have Dr. Jessie Strickland

Editor:
We are blessed may times over to have Dr. Jessie Strickland as our superintendent of schools. Dr. Strickland is a very different superintendent than any we have had in the last 40 years. She is astute, knowledgeable, gracious and totally informed. Ask her any question about what is happening in the school system, who is doing it, why it is happening, and the results expected; you will get a full, inclusive, detailed answer.
What a change, blessedly so, from a long line of superintendents that were mostly looking out for themselves, what salary they might inveigle, what perks might be given them; and, if asked a question (which they rarely let anyone do) would have to “get back to you.”  Indeed, we are blessed to now have a superintendent that truly cares that the children in Bulloch County receive the very best education possible.
With this said, it brings me to a point that has bothered me for weeks.
On Dec, 2, 2006 way back on page 12 in the Statesboro Herald, there was a very small article Dr. Strickland sent in to the Herald expressing great pride that our school system is one of 75 school systems in the entire nation to be awarded District Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The team that evaluated Bulloch County Schools was made up of distinguished educators from throughout the Southeast, not nearby cohorts as previously done with other accreditation groups.
None of this team was known before they appeared to make their evaluations.  They observed and questioned everybody! Administrators, central office staff, parents, community members ( I was not one of them so don’t ride that horse), business partners, school faculties, school staff members and students from all schools.
At the end of three days, then meetings among themselves, reports written, Bulloch County Schools were awarded Quality Assurance District Accreditation for the first time ever!
We have received one of the highest awards in the field of education, which encompasses children throughout the entire county!  Yet this honor is given very, very little space, at the bottom of the page far into the paper on page 12. A day or so later we open our papers and have pictures from years and years ago lauding football and people long gone. A  picture on that page was at least one-half page in size ... seems space is not the problem; must be priorities!
With this wonderful accreditation achievement of our total Bulloch County School System encompassing all of our hard working teachers, students and all who assist them, why did we not see this honor in banner headlines? Pictures galore? Stories from each school telling us their accomplished strengths? Teachers, students and administrators interviewed, thanked and lauded? Why, indeed, have we not heard from parents, students, people of the community?
Our schools are us! Our schools’ accomplishments reflect what we are as a community.
Being 1 of 75 school systems in the entire nation to receive this accreditation is big-time stuff.
Our schools, our children are excelling! They, and the entire system, certainly would like and deserve our acknowledgment and praise.
Thank you Dr. Strickland, administrators, staff, teachers and students.
We are greatly proud of you.
