Local Roundup: Lady Gamecocks can’t hold on, fall to Laney 48-44

    Two teams ranked in the state’s top 10 clashed in a region matchup Saturday as the Lady Gamecocks (14-3) hosted Laney.
    Screven led the majority of the game before eventually falling, 48-44. The Gamecocks shot out to a 10-0 lead and never trailed until the seventh-minute of the fourth period. There were six lead changes the rest of the way, with the Lady Wildcats pulling out the victory.
    Screven center Kadedra Evans had a double-double in the losing effort, contributing 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Screven’s boys win, 48-38
    Screven County used a 9-1 run late in the fourth quarter to come from behind for a 48-38 victory Saturday.
    The Gamecocks (7-10) trailed 32-31 with 4:50 remaining before their spurt.
    Antrjuan Albright led the way for SCHS with 16 points.
    Both Screven teams travel to Metter on Friday for their next action.

SEB splits with Jefferson County
    The girls basketball team of Southeast Bulloch downed Jefferson County Saturday, 40-29.
    Brittany Carter’s 26 points led the way for SEB (6-8, 2-5), which jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first period and never looked back.
    The boys team fell to Jefferson, 54-43.
    The Yellow Jackets (2-14, 0-7) led by two at halftime, 29-27, before struggling down the stretch.
    Chris Rogers led SEB with 14 points, while James Scott added 11 in the loss.

Both BA teams fall
    Stratford Academy (12-3) claimed two wins on the hardcourt Saturday as it downed Bulloch Academy in Macon.
    In boys action, the Gators let a close halftime score get away from them as the Class AAA Eagles (10-3) won, 53-30.
    BA (3-8) led by two at the end of the first quarter and trailed 24-22 at halftime before being held to six points over the final two periods.
    Will Powell led BA in scoring with nine points.
    In girls’ action, the Lady Gators (6-7) fell to the Lady Eagles 59-30.
    Addie Reddick paced BA with eight points, while Kacie and Kaylee Lanier added six points, each.

Country Day too much for Claxton’s girls
    Country Day topped the Lady Tigers in hoops action on Saturday, 53-30.
    Ashley Kennedy led Claxton with 13 points in the losing effort, while teammate Lacreasha Brewton added 10.
    The Lady Tigers will return to the court on Tuesday for a game at Richmond Hill.

Metter gets edged, 52-50
    Metter’s boys basketball team was edged by Laney Friday night, 52-50.
    Geoffrey Thurman and Terrance Collins scored 16 points apiece.

Portal Middle splits
    The boys basketball team of Portal Middle School downed ECI Middle Saturday morning by the score of 40-30.
    The Panthers won with a team effort, as Corey Walker (11 points), Jamie Hagan (10) and Devon Spells (nine) led the team in scoring.
    Portal’s girls weren’t as lucky, falling to ECI Middle 42-28.
    The Lady Panthers (6-3) were led in scoring by Jessica Brannen’s 11 points. Jalvin Jones added seven, while Nikki Sims and Boshna Williams contributed four points each.
    Both Portal teams finish regular season play with games at Jenkins Middle on Wednesday.
