The daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be at Georgia Southern University Tuesday as part of the university's celebration of her father's life and vision.
The Rev. Bernice King will speak at Georgia Southern's Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. as the culmination of events in Statesboro that include the annual parade and community celebration to be held on Monday.
The events start this morning with the Prayer and Leadership Breakfast, held at First Baptist Church beginning at 8 a.m. Savannah State University professor Dr. Ja Jahanes will speak at the breakfast and focus on this year's theme, "United We Stand: One Nation Under God."
On Monday, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade will take place with floats and local dignitaries participating.
Immediately following the parade, the community service will take place at the Tabernacle Baptist Church on Bulloch Street. Georgia Southern assistant professor Dr. Denise Weems will deliver the keynote address.
"This is not just a celebration for African-Americans," said Pearl Brown, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which is sponsoring the prayer breakfast, parade and community celebration. "But it's for all of Bulloch County's citizens. Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy was, and is, for all people and it's important to keep that in the forefront."
