Dr. Kemp Mabry

In future for the historical society

Dr. Brent Tharp has arranged programs for the next six months for the Bulloch County Historical Society. The public is invited to any and all of these programs.
Upcoming meetings of the Bulloch County Historical Society:

- January 15, 2007
    - Mr. Vince Exley, past president of the Georgia Salzburger Society
The Story of Georgia’s Salzburgers will be Mr. Exley’s presentation. The Georgia Salzburgers, a group of German-speaking Protestant colonists, founded the town of Ebenezer in what is now Effingham County. Arriving in 1734, the group received support from King George II of England and the Georgia Trustees after being expelled from its home in the Catholic principality of Salzburg (in present-day Austria). The Salzburgers survived extreme hardships in both Europe and Georgia to establish a prosperous and culturally unique community.
- February 19, 2007
    - Dr. Bob Harris, director of Skellig Rocks
Our annual St. Patrick’s speaker will join us in cooperation with the Savannah Irish Festival and discuss the history of Skellig Rocks. For 600 years the island was an important center of monastic life for Irish Christian monks. An Irish Celtic monastery, which is situated almost at the summit of the 230-metre-high rock, was built in 588, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is one of Europe’s better known but least accessible monasteries.

- March 19, 2007
    - Dr. Heidi Altman, Georgia Southern University
Dr. Altman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology will discuss the history of the Cherokee language.

- April 16, 2007
    - Dr. Ron Bailey, Visiting Distinguished Professor Georgia Southern University
Dr. Bailey will discuss his research on the history of cotton, its international implications and slavery.

- May 21, 2007
    - Bulloch County and US 301: An Historical Roundtable
Join us for a participatory roundtable discussion of the history of US 301 and Bulloch County. Bring your memories, questions, photographs and artifacts to share.

- May 28, 2007
    - Memorial Day Celebration — Averitt Center for the Arts — 11 a.m.

- June 19, 2007
    - Annual Dinner Meeting — Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church — 7 p.m.
