Gun, ammo sales stay strong in Bulloch

Gun, ammo sales stay strong in Bulloch

Jan Moore

Being a business editor right now is a double edged sword. There is plenty to write about, but unfortunately, the vast majority of it is not good.

For my column this week, I was determined to buck that trend and go find something uplifting to share with you. I wanted to find a local retailer that is doing well, one that is setting internal sales records.

I have found just that retailer. Southeastern Gun Supply on Highway 301 South is doing a phenomenal business, but perhaps not for the reasons that you might think.

When I sat down with co-owner Garth Long this past Saturday, the place was packed, and according to Long, it wasn’t because “rifle” deer hunting season is just around the corner (opens October 18).

“I really believe the election is driving our business here at the store,” Long said. “Hunters and gun enthusiasts are really afraid that their gun rights are going to be compromised in some way if Senator Obama is elected. These are serious collectors, and they are genuinely concerned.”

Long said candidates that have run on a platform of banning guns have not won, so he doesn’t feel that a significant gun ban will happen, but does feel legislative action resulting in the restriction of gun use in some way will be proposed.

“They don’t have to ban the sale and use of firearms, all they have to do is tax the ammunition,” he said. “With high enough taxes, the price of ammo will become prohibitive and that will be that. Just look at what a pack of cigarettes costs today.”

Long and his partner Clark O’Barr opened Southeastern Gun Supply last fall. Long said sales have increased every month since with the exception of this past July which was somewhat of a slow month. Long said the store requires five full time employees to handle the business they are getting.

Gary Pinard is a gun enthusiast and one of Long’s best customers.

“I have gone ahead and purchased a huge supply of ammo,” Pinard said. “You just don’t know what is going to happen. The crime being committed on the streets where firearms are involved is being committed by criminals, not by card carrying National Rifle Association members. Do you honestly think a gun ban is going to stop criminals who could care less about the law to begin with. Hardly.”

Long said he is doing a tremendous amount of mail order business as well.

“We’ve got people, other dealers that are buying four and five guns at a time with the assumption that the type of gun they are buying will be banned at some time in the near future. There is a ‘buy it while you can’ mentality out there right now. It is an anxious time for everybody in a lot of ways, and people are preparing for the worst.”

If the crowd in Long’s store and the sense of urgency running through it this past Saturday are a reflection of these uncertain times, then Long appears to be right, and it’s a good time to be in the gun business.

Until next week, I bid you au revoir.
