Mohring named All-American

Senior linebacker becomes 12th Eagle to receive the honor

Georgia Southern’s John Mohring earned his first All-America honor from the 2006 season. The senior linebacker was named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America team. He is the first Eagle to receive the honor since Freddie Pesqueira in 2002.
The AFCA All-America team is comprised of only 25 players – 11 on offense, 11 on defense and three special team members. He is one of two Southern Conference representatives on defense, joined by defensive lineman Marques Murrell from Appalachian State. Mohring is one of three linebackers to receive the honor this year.
With Mohring’s newest accolade, Georgia Southern is now tied for fourth all-time being represented 16 times (by 12 players) on the AFCA teams.
Mohring, who became a three-time All-Southern Conference pick this year, led the Eagles in tackles (93) and tackles for a loss (14.0). He also recorded two sacks, two interceptions and recovered a fumble.
Following his standout four-year career, Mohring ranked fifth all-time in Georgia Southern history with 302 tackles. Also during that span he played in 44 games recording 9.0 sacks, 37.0 tackles for a loss and six interceptions.
On Dec. 23, Mohring will represent Georgia Southern in the Magnolia Gridiron Classic in Jackson, Miss. The contest, a showcase game for seniors, is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
