Police: Man robbed at gunpoint at ATM in Statesboro

A man making a business deposit at a Statesboro ATM Sunday morning was robbed at gunpoint, police said.
An employee of Flash Foods on U.S. 301 South was making a deposit at the Sea Island Bank Fair Road branch Sunday around 10 a.m. when a man approached him and waved a gun, said Statesboro Police Capt. Scott Brunson. The suspect demanded the victim's watch and the bank deposit bag, and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Responding officers were unable to locate the offender. The victim was not harmed, he said.
Brunson warned citizens to be aware of their surroundings when carrying large amounts of cash and when conducting any banking business at ATMs.
"Make sure you are in well lighted areas, be very familiar with your surroundings and aware of suspicious people in the area," he said.
People making business bank deposits can call police for an escort to the bank, he said.
"We do offer that service to local businesses if calls for service permit," he said.
However, if a situation arises that limits the availability of an officer to provide the escort, a caller may have to wait until a unit is available, he said.
The armed robbery is still under investigation, Brunson said. "Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Statesboro Police Det. Tommy Brown" at (912) 212-2304. All calls will be confidential, he said.
