Police: Armed robber arrested after store clerk spotted him on road

An observant convenience store manager on her way to meet police after her store was robbed spotted a man matching the description of the suspect, and he ended up behind bars.
Statesboro Police responded May 21 to Clyde’s Market #48 at the intersection of Veteran’s Memorial Parkway and U.S. 301 South shortly after 2 a.m. and spoke with a clerk, who gave a description of the man she said robbed the store at gunpoint, said Statesboro Police Chief Stan York.
The clerk told officers the man “entered the store, brandished a handgun and demanded money,” he said.
Det. Keith Holloway responded to the scene and began an investigation. The store manager was contacted, and on her way to the store, she saw a man walking along U.S. 301 South who matched the robbery suspect’s description, York said.
Officer Brian Jackson and Sgt. Katrina Marson located the man and questioned him, he said. The man, later identified as Jerry Javonte Thomas, 26, West Jones Avenue, gave a false name, and was charged with giving false information, then taken to the Bulloch County Jail, he said.
Further investigation led to police arresting Thomas for involvement in the robbery, he said. Thomas was charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, he said.
Anyone with information regarding the robbery is asked to contact Holloway at (912) 764-1542.
