Former Olympian Butch Reynolds to speak at GSU tonight

Text Size: Small Large Medium
Three-time Olympian Butch Reynolds, currently the speed and nutrition coach for the top-ranked Ohio State University football team, will visit Georgia Southern today.
Reynolds, regarded as an expert in teaching skills needed for peak performance, will speak to GSU students and faculty during the day. In the evening, he’ll give a 7:30 p.m. presentation in the auditorium of the College of Education Building, which will be free and open to the public.
A 1991 graduate of Ohio State, Reynolds set the world record in the 400-meter dash in 1988 with a time of 0:43.29. He held that mark for over a decade until it was finally broken by Michael Johnson in 1999. Reynolds competed in the 1988, 1992 and ’96 Olympics, winning a gold medal in the 1,600-meter relay and a silver medal in the 400-meter dash in 1988.
At Ohio State, Reynolds is responsible for enhancing the “speed, agility, mobility and endurance of each and every player through a combination of speed training, aerobics and nutrition,” he said.
“Ohio State is currently the No. 1 college football team in the United States in Division I-A,” said Dan Czech, an associate professor in Georgia Southern’s Department of Health and Kinesiology within the College of Heath and Human Sciences. “Coach Reynolds will talk about why the Buckeyes are faster, and he will also discuss running science, mental toughness and his Olympic experiences.”
Reynolds, an assistant track coach for the Buckeyes from 1996 to 1998, is looking forward to visiting Statesboro, Czech said.
“He’s excited to come to Bulloch County and meet everybody,” Czech said. “He’s a very positive and dynamic teacher.”
