Foster shows consistency in first mini-camp

Back at home following his first NFL rookie mini-camp this past weekend, Jayson Foster was happy with the way he performed and anxiously anticipating his next trip to Miami.

The former Georgia Southern star and Walter Payton Award winner signed with the Dolphins as a free agent last month and hopes to make the team as a receiver and/or special teams player.

He worked out with the Dolphins for the first time during the three-day camp, and reports out of Miami indicated he displayed consistency catching the ball and showcased the speed that terrorized Southern Conference opponents during his days as an Eagle. The players worked out in shells and were limited from contact.

“The whole mini-camp went pretty well,” Foster said Tuesday morning via telephone from his home in Canton. “It was a great learning experience, and I can’t wait to get back down there.”

Foster’s weekend in Miami included a one-on-one conversation with legendary NFL coach Bill Parcells, the Dolphins’ executive vice president of football operations. Parcells offered “words of wisdom” to Foster, including advice on catching punts. Reporters in Miami viewed Parcells taking the time to talk with Foster as an encouraging sign for the NFL hopeful. Parcells also spoke with Foster over the phone the day Miami signed him.

“Anytime he speaks, you want to listen,” Foster said. “He helps everybody out there. When he talks you pay special attention.”

First-year Miami coach Tony Sparano has indicated the Dolphins are looking for an athletic slot receiver, a void Foster is eager to fill. At 5-foot-8 Foster, will have to disprove doubters who think he’s too small for the NFL. On Tuesday, a video interview with him was prominently featured atop of the Dolphins homepage at www.miamidolphins.com.

Foster will remain in Canton until he heads back to Miami for another camp on May 18. He’ll continue working out to stay in shape and be ready for his upcoming chance to prove his worthiness at the next level.
