Bulloch shoppers join rush for early bargains

Holiday shoppers crowded Bulloch County stores Friday searching for bargains on what is traditionally the start of the Christmas shopping season.
Dee Cole was at the Statesboro Mall Friday morning, braving the crowds as she finished up her holiday purchases.
“I always swore that I wouldn’t come shopping the day after Thanksgiving,” she said. “But I’m glad I did it because now I’m done with everything.”
Cole said the door buster specials and huge savings were the primary reason she decided to wake up early on Friday.
“Everything I got was at least 50 to 60 percent off,” she said.
While Cole said she usually avoids the stores on the day after Thanksgiving, Cindy Florence said she goes shopping on that day every year in search of sales.
“I don’t like the lines, but you can get a lot of good deals,” she said outside of Kmart Friday morning.
Florence said she was able to find everything she was looking for as she bought presents for her family members.
Liz Driscoll, store coach for Kmart, said she arrived at 4:30 a.m. and there were one or two cars in the parking lot waiting for the store to open.
“By about 5:30, we had people lined up waiting to get in,” Driscoll said.
The most popular items sold early on Friday were televisions and clothing, Driscoll said.
Brenda O’Quinn, manager of the Statesboro Mall, said she was “very, very pleased,” with the crowds inside the mall on Friday.
O’Quinn said people seem to be nicer to each other during this time of year, even with the long lines in the stores. She said she saw someone carry out a large box for a woman and another woman put the merchandise of an older woman in her shopping cart while they waited in line.
“The spirit of the season comes out when you’re this close to Christmas,” she said.
