SEB hammers Bryan County

    BROOKLET – Make that six.
The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (14-9, 9-4 Region 3-AA) rode three triples, four doubles and a standup inside-the-park home run by Matt Conner to knock off non-region visitor Bryan County 17-7 Wednesday and built on the five-game winning streak they had heading into Senior Night.
As for the seniors — they were glad they could put on a show.
“We just came out and stroked the ball today,” said Justin Daniels (3-for-4, 3B, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBIs). “Had a good day.”
David McCarthy (3-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBIs, HBP) agreed: “Everybody did what they were supposed to do, so we ended up coming out on top.”
Dustin Stall (4 BB, RBI, R) hopes the Jackets can ride the momentum from a six-game winning streak into the postseason: “We’re going to go into the playoffs and keep the streak going.”
Senior Casey Woodrum also contributed in the blowout, finishing 1-for-1 with a double, three walks, three runs and an RBI.
Corey Nesmith, who hit Southeast’s first grand slam in the new ballpark earlier this season, was also honored on Senior Night.
The Yellow Jackets made a statement in the bottom of the second inning.
Leading 1-0, SEB plated 11 runs in the frame, and Tony Raymond, Joe Wilson and David Wood each crossed the plate twice in the inning.
At one point in the second, the Jackets had five straight RBI hits, including four that went for extra bases. It was also in the second when Conner (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI, HBP) hit his three-run inside-the-parker off the wall in deep centerfield.
“Conner really got a hold of it,” said SEB coach Stephen Hoyle. “He put it in the deepest part of the park, and he was gone out of that batter’s box and didn’t slow down one bit. When the throw came in, the shortstop was out kind of deep, so I’m like, ‘Yeah, it will take two perfect throws to get him.’ He had a pretty good run on it.”
Southeast Bulloch had nine different players score, and saw work from four different pitchers — Jarad Page, Bobby Robbins, Jordan Davis and Cory Ward.
Kurt Schuman hit a three-run homer in the top of the third for the Redskins, and Chad Klopp doubled in a run and scored twice.
Bryan County used five different pitchers through the five-inning loss.
Southeast Bulloch is clicking at the right time, hosting Westside today at 5:30 p.m. The Patriots haven’t lost a region game, but SEB is unbeaten at home in region play.
“We’ve been winning a lot of good games at the house,” Hoyle said, “and we’ve been preaching about living in right centerfield. We hit a lot of line drives — balls right into the right-center gap (against BCHS), and that’s huge for the confidence heading into (today’s) game.”
A win against Westside would put the Jackets — who hold tiebreakers against Screven County and Swainsboro — in good shape for a No. 2 seed and the right to host in the playoffs, but they won’t be able to do it alone.
“We’ll have to get help,” said Hoyle. “We don’t control our own destiny out there. Westside hasn’t lost a region game yet, and we haven’t lost a region game here. It’ll be a big game, and we just want to play good ball. If we beat Westside, Screven’s got to play them for the last game. Depending on what happens with Westside and Screven, there’s a possibility we can host a game here.”
