GSP trooper injured in chase after suspect flees road block

A Georgia State Patrol trooper was injured Wednesday afternoon when he gave chase to a man fleeing from a road block.
Sr. Trooper D. H. Averitt suffered minor injuries to his back requiring medical attention, said Trooper first-Class John Priest.
Priest and Averitt were conducting a license check at the intersection of Cawana and Burkhalter roads around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when Derrick Mante Scott, 29, Raven Lane, pulled up and showed Averitt an ID card — not a driver’s license. When Averitt asked him to pull off the road, Scott fled, Priest said.
Both Priest and Averitt gave chase, following Scott for a couple miles until he pulled into the Greenbriar Subdivision area, stopping on Oakleaf Drive, he said.
Scott abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot, but Averitt and Priest pursued him and captured him, but he still struggled.
“He refused to stop and resisted arrest,” Priest said. Pulling out his Taser, Priest took aim and fired, striking Scott and ending the struggle.
Scott was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, facing several traffic charges including stop sign violation, speeding, driving without a license and suspended license, as well as felony fleeing from officers, obstruction and outstanding felony warrants from Bulloch County superior and state court, he said.
    Averitt was treated and released.
