Giving flags a proper retirement

Bulloch group sets up box to accept old flags

Those tattered, worn, faded flags now have a respectable way out. Take them to a drop-off box, where they will be collected, and properly retired (and disposed of) by local boy scouts.
Last year, the Archibald Bulloch Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution had such as response to a flag retirement ceremony, flag chairman Gloria Leeb decided to extend the service.
The box is located in front of NAPA Auto Parts on Northside Drive East.
The flags will be collected and properly, respectfully destroyed by various troops from the Canoochee District Boy Scouts of America, she said.
Sr. Eagle Scout James Welle led a flag retirement ceremony for the chapter, and local readers responded overwhelmingly to an invitation published in the Statesboro Herald to bring their faded, worn and tattered flags for proper disposal, she said.
"I thought, these people have been saving these flags because they respect them," she said.
So now, those with flags needing proper disposal can bring them to a drop-off collection box.
"The Flag Code suggests that 'when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning," she said. "For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration."
Taking the flags to the drop off box would eliminate that worry.
"As a service to our community, the Archibald Bulloch chapter NSDAR has installed a box for the collection of unserviceable American flags," she said.
