Local Roundup: Statesboro girls win meet at SEB

    BROOKLET — The Statesboro girl’s track and field team took home first place honors Tuesday in a four-team meet at Southeast Bulloch.
    The Lady Devils tallied 83 points to Southeast Bulloch’s 61.5, Liberty County’s 60.5 and Claxton’s 42.
    In the 300-meter hurdles, Statesboro’s NoraA Billups came in second at 54.26. Billups won the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet, nine inches.
    In the 3200m, Sarah Burgess (SEB) placed first with a time of 14:37 and Lindsey Lynch (SEB) placed second at 16:09.
    Statesboro’s Gwen Jones threw the shot put 39-21⁄2 to take first with SEB’s Sarah Herndon coming in second at 341⁄2. Herndon won the discus with a throw of 114-10 and SEB’s Brittany Key came in second at 81-6.
    Raven Thomas won the long jump for SHS with a jump of 16 feet. Thomas also won the 400m with a time of 59.28.
    In the high jump, Claire Alston (SHS) and Rebekah Harville (SEB) tied for second at 4 feet, 8 inches.
    In the pole vault, Candace McElveen (SEB) recorded 6 feet for first and Victoria Bowen recorded a 5-6 for second.
    In the 800m, Susanna McKee took first with a 2:27. In the 100m hurdles, Tren Rogers (SHS) was first with a time of 17:75.
    Alesha Mercer won the 200m for SEB with a 27:89 and Teia McCollum was second (29:01). Mercer was second in the 400m with a run of 51.45.
    Statesboro won the 400m relay and 1600m relay.
    In the boys’ race, Liberty County took first (85 points), followed by Statesboro (81), Southeast Bulloch (40) and Claxton (38).
    Orlando Rock was first in the 310m hurdles with a time of 42.99. Nick Hunter won the 3200m at 11:32.
    Victor Sweet (SHS) was second in the discus (136-8). Patrick Jenkins won the triple jump for SHS at 42-71⁄2 followed by SEB’s Tharon Davis (42-5).
    Mario Jackson jumped 20 feet, 8 inches to win the long jump for SHS. Jackson also won the high jump at 6-6, tying with Statesboro’s Cedric Wynn.
    Kale Reed (SEB) won the pole vault (6-6). Patrick Jenkins (SHS) won the 400m with a run of 50.95.
    Southeast’s Gerald Williams won the 200m (22.86) and placed second in the 100m (11.33).
    Walter Davis was second in the 110m hurdles at 16.88. Justin Jordan (SHS) won the 800m (2:06).
    Statesboro was second in the 1600m relay while Southeast Bulloch won the 400m relay.
    The Yellow Jackets will be at Screven County on Thursday. Statesboro will be at the Wolfpack Invitational Saturday in Evans, Ga.

Frederica tops BA
    Bulloch Academy dropped to 3-3 with a 5-2 loss to Frederica on the diamond Tuesday.
    Taylor Burke took the loss for the Gators, pitching a complete game and striking out nine. He was also 2-for-3 from the plate.
    Matthew Sapp went 2-for-4 for BA which travels to David Emanuel Academy on Thursday.

Screven baseball shuts out Metter
    SYLVANIA — Screven County improved to 3-0 in Region 3-AA with an 8-0 win over Metter Tuesday.
    Jeremy Rosier got the win for SC (5-4) and Cameron Haydon picked up a three-inning save.
    Walker Stuart went 2-for-4, Daniel Griffin was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Michael Johnson was 2-for-4 and Chandler Johnson had a bases clearing double.
    The Gamecocks will be at Jefferson County today at 6 p.m.

Portal track results
    REIDSVILLE — The Portal girls and boys track and field teams each placed third Tuesday at a four team meet at Tattnall County High School.
    Catherine Mincey took home three first place finishes, winning the 400m (1:07), 300m hurdles (55.00) and the high jump (4-6).
    Nick Prescott won the discus throw (114-2) and the shot put (46-3).
    Jaleisa Coleman won the 100m hurdles (18.8) and Chase Sheffield won the long jump (20-4).
    The Panthers will be at Southeast Bulloch next Wednesday.

Screven soccer beats Metter
    METTER — The Lady Gamecocks of Screven County beat Metter 11-0 in soccer action Tuesday.
    Christi Boston had a hat trick for SCHS (6-2, 2-1 Area 3 A/AA). Rochelle Shuman had two goals and Morgan Boswell had two as well.
    Meghan McGuire, Eva True, Haley Iten, Lydia Hendrix and Erin Lambert each tallied a lone score in the win.
    Screven hosts Jefferson County today at 5 p.m.

SEB, Metter split tennis matches
    BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch and Metter tennis splits matches on Tuesday.
    The SEB boys (3-1, 1-0 Region 3-AA) won 5-0.
    Aaron Groover (6-1, 6-0), Sam Dickerson (6-0, 6-0) and Brandon Sellers (forfeit) all won in singles play.
    Brooks Edenfield and Will Jones (6-3, 6-3) and William Groover and Sean Brannen (6-1, 6-2) won in doubles action.
    The Metter girls topped the Lady Yellow Jackets (1-3, 0-1).
    Alex Hendricks (6-2, 6-2), Adrienne Lanier (6-2, 6-4) and Anna Williams (6-3, 6-3) all notched singles win. In doubles action, Amy Nagel and Erica Monrique (7-5, 6-2) and Ashley McLamb and Jada McNeely (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) took home wins.
    Southeast will return to the court today, heading to Swainsboro for a 4 p.m. match.

Screven sweeps Westside tennis
    AUGUSTA — The Screven County tennis teams both defeated Westside on Tuesday.
    The Lady Gamecocks (9-2, 2-0 Region 3-AA) got a 6-2, 7-6, (7-4) singles win from Evan Sheppard and a 6-4, 6-3 win from Catherine Wells.
    In doubles play, Carter Mills and Missy Zeagler won 6-4, 6-1 and Evan Blackburn and Kelsey Forehand won 6-0, 6-1 in doubles play to win the match 4-1.
    The boys (6-5, 2-0) won 3-2 getting singles wins from Eric Boddiford (6-4, 6-4), Jim Freeman (6-4, 6-1) and Hunter Sommers (6-1, 6-1).
    Screven hosts Jeferson County Thursday at 4:15 p.m.

BA sweeps Pinewood
    BELLVILLE — The Bulloch Academy tennis teams swept Pinewood Christian on Tuesday.
    The Gators (3-1) won 4-1 with Paul Son (8-5), Matt Williamson (8-2) and Brandon Walker (8-2) all winning in singles play. Rob Mallard and Casey Webb won in doubles action (8-2).
    The Lady Gators (3-1) also won 4-1. Kate Anna Akins won 8-3, Mary Catherine Speigner won 8-0 and Erin Sullivan won 8-2 in singles action.
    In doubles play, Sally Smith and Mckenzie Webb won 8-3.
    Bulloch will travel to Robert Toombs on March 25.

SEBMS splits with Effingham
    BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Middle School soccer teams split with Effingham County on Tuesday.
    The Lady Yellow Jackets (2-0-1) won 2-0 with goals from Tori Nullis and Cindy Davis. The boys’ team (1-1) fell 1-0.
    Both squads will be back in action today, hosting Burke County at 4 p.m. at Southeast Bulloch High.

GSU women top App
    BOONE, N.C. — Slight adjustments helped the Georgia Southern women’s tennis team notch their eighth victory of the season, as the Eagles ousted Appalachian State by a 5-2 decision on Monday afternoon at the ASU Tennis Courts in Boone.  
    The Eagles (8-7, 2-3 SoCon) switched up their doubles lineup playing the freshmen tandem of Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) at the No. 1 seed. The duo registered their 11th victory of the season defeating the Mountaineers Mallory Cook and Anja Gugger by a final of 8-2. Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) and Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) cruised by Appalachian State’s tandem of Heather Prior and Monica Thomas winning by a score of 8-2.
    GSU tallied four singles victories helping them earn their second SoCon victory of the season. Beavers recorded her 11th singles victory of the season downing Thomas from the No. 3 position in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Rolle earned her 10th dual victory of the year taking down Prior 6-4, 6-3, while Kegerreis dropped Gugger 6-3, 6-4 from the No. 1 seed. Caforio was successful from the No. 5 slot defeating Elizabeth Holland 3-6, 6-4, 14-12.
    Georgia Southern returns to the hard-courts Saturday, March 29, when they play host to Davidson. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.

Rocker comes in 2nd
    DUBLIN — Bulloch Academy senior Mark Rocker fired a 71 to finish second in an 84-player match at Dublin Country Club Monday.
    Rocker missed low medalist honors by one stroke. The Gators finished 13th as a team.
    Bulloch hosts a multi-team match Monday at Forest Heights Country Club.
