Lindsey Martin tallied a goal and had three assists as Statesboro routed rival Southeast Bulloch 11-0 Tuesday at Mill Creek.
The Blue Devils (4-6) had been struggling to find results recently. Tuesday they seemed to take all their frustrations out on the Yellow Jackets (2-4).
“All the hard games that we’ve had, it seems like even if we come out strong we kind of fall back in the second half,” said Martin, a junior. “This just helps us boost our confidence.”
Martin scored the first goal of the game by whipping in a strike from the top of the box in the 4th minute. Martin then notched his first assist on a throw in to Yeager Sadler who chipped home for the Devils’ second score. Trent Doty laced a shot from 18 yards out in the 17th minute. Martin and Sadler connected again in the 35th minute for the final goal of the half, putting SHS up 4-0.
There was plenty more where that came from.
Statesboro went full throttle in the second half, scoring seven times and ending the match with 19 shots on goal.
Jay Brunson trickled in a cross from Erick Quiterio to make it 5-0 in the 44th, then Quiterio put home a gimmie on a through ball from Martin in the 53rd pushing the lead to 6-0.
Statesboro coach Chad Prosser then put most of his younger squad in and watched them tally five scores of their own.
Kyle Francis made it 7-0 off a Kelly Dessommes corner kick in the 58th minute. Thirteen minutes later Dessommes curled one in for Francis again, who lobbed it into the top corner of the net.
In the 74th minute, Michael Samiratedu ducked into the box and headed home another Dessommes cross. Dessommes helped once more when his cross squeaked through the box and found the right boot of Chris Bowens to make it 10-0.
Tehrelle Billups provided the final margin, toe tapping in a Bowens throw in the 78th minute.
“We just have to finish with the ball,” said Martin. “We have the opportunity, we have the skill it’s just a matter of putting the ball away. We know how to win, maybe this will help us figure out a way to keep the win.”
Statesboro will be back on the campus of Georgia Southern on Thursday at the RAC, hosting the Academy of Richmond County with a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.
Southeast will travel to Vidalia on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match.
